About Alfalfa Express
I started Alfalfa Express in 2009 after returning home from a church mission to Dallas TX. While I was in Texas I learned they ship most of their hay from the west, and I was often asked whether I had any connections for Alfalfa Hay. Because I grew up riding horses and around farming, I did. After I returned from my mission, along with a companion, we started Alfalfa Express. Our vision was to vertically integrate the process, starting with growing alfalfa, shipping it, and finally wholesaling and retailing the hay. We started by brokering everything, we bought hay from a local farm, brokered a truck to haul it, and sold it to a customer direct. In 2010 we purchased our first over the road semi-truck and started doing some of the hauling ourselves.
In 2012, we had an opportunity to co-lease a farm, which we did for 2 years until the opportunity came along to purchase a farm with an investor in 2014. Our investor had recently sold some property and wanted a place for some of those proceeds, so he bought the farm and we partnered up with the vision of adding acreage, improving the ground, getting a permanent lessor and then selling the farm for a profit. We started that process in 2014 and over the next 3 years we added pivots, proved water rights, improved the roads and property and in 2018 we found a tenant and began leasing the farm. Over that period, we continued to sell the hay off that farm, as well as purchase from other farms to sell to our customers. We expanded our market from the south (Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma) horse ranches to large dairies on the west coast and overseas to markets like China, Japan, and Korea. We developed customers that would buy the hay delivered to LA so that we could get paid quicker and not have to risk oversees and international business.
In 2017 we sold about 30,000 tons of hay which amounted to about 1500 truckloads. I am grateful to our clients for our continued growth and success over these last years. As we continue to grow here at Alfalfa Express we understand that none of these things were and are possible without quality Alfalfa, quality service and of course our customers. We look forward to helping you with all of your Alfalfa needs.
